I’m standing in this wilderness
And it appears to be
Somewhere between Egypt and
The land You promised me
I’ve got sand in both my sandals
And the sun is awfully hot
I hear a lot of folks complaining
About the things we haven’t got
They say we should return now
Go back the way we came
And camp there by the Nile
Where we had water, meat, and grain
But I recall I was a slave there
How I longed then to be free
And my heart still wants to go
To that good land You promised me
Just over in the distance
By faith, a cloud I see
Moses said “It is God’s presence”
And that’s enough for me
I’m not sure where I’m going
But I know where I have been
So when the kids complain to me
“Oh Mom! Manna again?’
I look over in the distance
And by faith, a cloud I see
I believe it is Your Presence
And that’s enough for me
The journey’s long
My husband’s gone
The children have all grown
And still I haven’t seen the land
That I could call my own
My shoes have not worn out, Lord
I can’t say the same of me
And I may not live to take a stand
On the land You promised me
But I clearly see the cloud now
As it envelops me
I know it is Your presence
And it has been enough- for me
“And the Lord went before them by day
in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way…”
Exodus 13:21 (KJV)
