I take a vacation without leaving home
Each night in my own backyard
Sneaking out of the house with a flashlight and charts
To await the birth of the stars
My family is inside just watching T.V.
Unaware of the night’s silent show
While the infinite stars in their eternal march
Remind me of long, long ago
I am one with Egyptians and Romans and Greeks
And the shepherds who tended their sheep
Each star tells a story- each one has a name
Constellations that live while men sleep
If I watch longer still, I can hear the waves roar
And feel the sea captain’s delight
When he prayed for clear weather all during the day
And Polaris shines down her pure light
I suppose I would stay out all night with the dog
In my backyard reverie
But I have been found by my husband and son
And they’re patiently waiting for me
So I gather my flashlight, my charts, and my thoughts
And hurry off to bed
With Orion and Taurus and Gemini
Still dancing in my head
Yes, I take a vacation without leaving home
Each night in my own backyard
Sneaking out of the house with a flashlight and charts
To wish upon a star
