The Pharisee

You looked at me among the men

That stood and listened to You then

I weighed Your words in my own heart

And of Your truth took only part.

I followed You on sunny days

Hiding from Your steadfast gaze

I called myself a Pharisee

And set myself apart.

I seldom did the terrible sins

That seemed the lot of publicans

My heart was full of darker deeds

Though I was blind- thought I could see.

And while I chose the path that seemed

to be so right in my own eyes

Your eyes invoked one final plea

And You chose the road to Calvary-

For me

for me

for even me

Your blood has cleansed this Pharisee.
