To Stop and Smell

I know what I like

And some things are worth the wait

I try to live life by these two mottos

Whenever I remember

My memory of late has not been up to par

At least that’s what I suspect

…but I can’t remember

Some things are worth the wait

And I know what I like

Lately it’s the color red

The deep dark red of a rose

Just beginning to bloom

Like the one I saw in my garden

Just this morning

(or was it yesterday?)

Dew lay on the petals so soft and sweet

Reminded me of long -ago Romance

With just a hint of mystery

Some things are worth the wait

Like my husband- who has been gone now these twenty years

He had such a temper when we married

But he mellowed so nicely with age that

I am quite glad I kept him

I know what I like

Lately it’s the color red

That’s why beneath these socks and sensible black shoes

My toenails are on fire with a color she called

Eternal flame

Some things are worth the wait

I know the cars are honking

Other drivers are gesturing at me

They think I am an old woman

With poor eyesight or (even worse) forgetfulness

But as I sit here at this intersection

I know what I like

Green is nice…like pine trees

Yellow… the color of daffodils

But I like RED
