Fishing Lessons

I took a class on fishing

Then I set out to sea

I think that I am trying to do

What my Lord would want of me

I didn’t sleep at all last night

Too busy staring at the net

I haven’t seen a single fish

I’m hopeful, but not yet

Okay, okay the sun is up

I think I’ll read a book

Written by an expert fisherman

He knows how to set the hook

I’m ready now to try again

The sun is going down

I’ll throw this net in such a way

Those fish will have to come around

I’m getting kind of sleepy now

And I’m trying to stay afloat

I wonder if there is a hole

In the bottom of this boat

The morning is finally dawning

And I hear a voice from shore

“Child, have you any fish?”

I answer “no” but nothing more

“Cast your net on the right side

And you will find” he calls to me

I did the thing that stranger said

I caught one-hundred and fifty -three!

I think that stranger is my Lord

Who else could it be?

I could never have accomplished this

If it had been up to me

It’s you Lord, it’s all about you

It was never about me

I can see the fish laid on the coals

That you prepared for me

You didn’t need my striving, Lord

You didn’t need my toil

But you let me join you in your work

Just so I could share your joy

So when you call me in the future

I’ve got on my fisher’s coat

You can find me Lord, I’m ready

I’ll be resting in the boat

“Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great

fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet

was not the net broken.  Jesus saith unto them, ‘Come and dine’….”

John 21: 11-12a (KJV).
